Donald August Hauck

Donald August Hauck, age 81, of Brainerd, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. Don was born in Leola, South Dakota to August & Hulda (Bender) Hauck.

He graduated from Brainerd High School and was an extraordinary athlete, playing both football and basketball. As a sophomore, Don was selected for the 1954 All-Conference football team, and was a member of the 1954 Brainerd High School State Championship basketball team. He passed on his love of sports by providing 31 years of exemplary leadership, guidance and sportsmanship to participants of Brainerd's youth baseball leagues.

On August 5, 1965, Don married the love of his life, Shirley Pangburn. Together they had 6 children. He worked for 30 years at Camp Ripley, and was a member of the Minnesota National Guard for 37 years. Don was on the executive board of the Brainerd American Legion, as well as recently serving as Chaplain and was the former Post Commander. He was a proud member of the Color Guard, acting as the treasurer.

Often described as one of the nicest, kindest man many people knew, he leaves a legacy of never saying a bad word about anyone.

Don will be forever missed by his wife of 51 years, Shirley; his children: Bruce (Julie) of Brainerd, Colleen Blacktin of Honolulu, Brian Hauck of Baxter, Scott (Kathy) Hauck of Bloomington and Tina Hauck of Brainerd; 10 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and his siblings: Mabel (Meryl) Vandervelde of Cottage Grove, WI, Robert (Kim) Hauck of Madison, WI, and MaryAnn (John) Erickson of Pine River.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, and infant son, Chad.

Funeral Service for Don will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017, 11AM, at First Presbyterian Church in Brainerd. Visitation will be from 10-11 AM, also at the church. Immediately after the funeral service, lunch will be served at the American Legion. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at 2 PM.
