Joyce E. Olson

Joyce E. Olson

Joyce Elaine (Olson) Olson, age 89, of East Gull Lake, MN and Crosslake, MN (lake home) died on Saturday, January 27th, 2018 at Essentia St. Joseph's Medical Center. She was born on June 15th, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN to Martin Lund and Amanda Pearl (Anderson) Olson.

She was a consummate "big sister", being the oldest of 5 children. Joyce graduated from Minneapolis West HS. She moved to Brainerd in 1952 with her husband, Stan, to lay roots in the "north country". She worked in retail, owned Mezner's Children's Store, and was a co-owner with her husband of Olson Tree Service. She was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church. Joyce will be remembered as generous, caring, strong-willed, trusting, loving, loyal, motherly, and a true matriarch to her family. Everybody was grateful to have such a special woman in their lives; Joyce was a true class act. She was intelligent - a woman before her time. She was progressive in thought and actively involved with doing her part in social justice and volunteerism. She taught herself to text and use Facebook and stored 3,000 pictures of grand and great-grandchildren on her computer. Joyce was an avid bridge and card player. She was referred to as a "card shark", only playing to win, never to lose. She volunteered for many years in the Brainerd school system, playing cribbage with math students, reading with elementary students, and being a part of the Paul Bunyan Transition Plus Program. Joyce donated to many causes. She remembered birthdays, accomplishments, and special events of all types. If somebody was important to Joyce's family or friends, that person was important to Joyce, too. She had a strong sense of fashion and was known for her beautiful scarves and jewelry. Joyce worked until 82 years old at Hallmark in the Westgate Mall, mostly for social reasons. Her children had to encourage her to retire as they wanted to retire, too, and worried about appearances if they retired before her! She was known as "Gram" to all and as "Mom" and "Grandma" to too many to count. Joyce had a soft spot for children - her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her biggest sources of pride and joy.

She is survived by her children, Steven Lund ( Carolyn "Chuck") Olson, Pamela Ann Olson (James "Jimmy") Lorenz, and Jill Lorraine (Olson) Davis; grandchildren, Amanda Joy Muehlhausen (husband, Derrick Fernando), Trent Michael Davis, Ethan James (Madilyn) Davis; great-grandchildren, Andrew Zane Davis, Vivienne Evangeline Fernando and Signe Rose Fernando; sisters, Donna (Olson) Dickinson, Mary Lou (Olson) Fowler; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many friends - young and old.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Stanley D. Olson; parents, Martin and Amanda Olson; siblings, Martin Leland Olson, Patricia Ann (Olson) Moe; and 2 nieces.

Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Monday, January 29th at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter. Visitation will continue at 10am on Tuesday, January 30th until the 11am funeral at Lord of Life Lutheran Church.

Memorials are preferred to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Disabled Veterans of MN/America, or Lord of Life Church. Arrangements are with Nelson-Doran Funeral Home.
