Darrell Edward Otness, lovingly called ‘Pa’, passed away unexpectedly on December 10, 2020 at the age of 67. He was born in Minneapolis, MN to Donald Otness and Gladys (Hamilton) Otness on November 9, 1953. He resided in the Minneapolis community and surrounding areas until 1996; moving to Brainerd, MN where he resided with Jan until moving to Pine River.

Pa is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jan; Mother-in-law Doris Asselstine; 3 children: Jennifer (Kevin) Teachout, Laurie (Tony) Linn, Jason (Kristina) Adams; multiple grandchildren: Ashley (David) Hammer, Amanda (Joe) Teachout-Emerson, Josh Adams, Thomas Teachout, Hannah Linn, Gavin Adams, and Wyatt Adams; and great grandchildren Riley (Sutherland), Hudson, Micah & Lucas Hammer. He is also survived by his brothers Duane “Ottie” (Rita) Otness, Preston “Mooch” (Lynne) Otness, and sister Barb (Rick) Karkoff; and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Maggie.

Pa is proceeded in death by his father, Donald; his mother, Gladys; his father-in-law Charles Asselstine; his great granddaughter Amelia Jean; and many precious pets he’s cared for.

In life, Pa was a mechanic by trade, and greatly enjoyed working on and repairing small engines. He loved going to “the club” with his friends and riding his Harley every chance he got. Family was the most important thing to Pa, and he let everyone know it, always proud and excited to share stories of those he loved. He spent his time with family going on leisurely boat rides, fishing, kayaking, camping, playing yard games, and teaching them trade skills. He had the largest collection of Hot Wheels and shared this passion with his great grandsons. He was a dog-whisperer, never meeting a pet that didn’t instantly adore him. He enjoyed rescuing dogs, training them, and giving them a wonderful life. He was such a giver and had the largest heart. Heart Grocery was his and Jan’s business for multiple years. He was a staple in the Brainerd and Pine River communities for many years, always there to assist a neighbor. Anyone that knew Darrell is blessed to have memories of his kind spirit and mischievous personality. We will all miss him dearly.

Family plans to have a memorial service to celebrate the life of Darrell in summer 2021. Condolences may be mailed to Jan and his family at PO Box 726, Pine River, MN 56474.
