Donna Whalen

Donna Mae Whalen passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Dec 23rd, 2020 after an infection of her right leg led to complications.

She is survived by her two sons Christopher (Michelle) Bjorklund and Eric (Rachel) Bjorklund, stepdaughters, Hannah (Joel) Christian and Claire (Justin) Winter, granddaughters Ana and Addison Bjorklund and grandson, Nolan Powers-Bjorklund.

Donna is one of two children of Bernhard and Maybelle Winkelman, both of whom are deceased. Donna is survived by her sister, Theanna (Gary) Grivna.

Donna was a 1970 graduate of Brainerd High School. She received an BS degree in Education from Bemidji State University and her Administrative/Master’s Degree from St. Cloud State University.

Donna began her teaching career at Whittier Elementary School in Brainerd, MN. She then went on to teach at other school districts throughout Northern Minnesota (Mountain Iron) and Southern Minnesota (St. Claire). In 1986, she settled in as a Special Education teacher at Brainerd High School, before becoming the school’s Dean of Students and then the Assistant Principal. Donna finished up her administrative career as the Principal of Washington Middle School and then Forestview Middle School.

Donna most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Anyone who knew her, knew she was an extremely proud mother and grandmother.

A celebration of her life will be held at Brenny Funeral Chapel on Jan 16th, 2021 at 2:00pm. There will be a Zoom link provided for those who can’t attend, and a visitation time between 12-2:00pm for those who wish to pay their respects, but want to avoid a crowd. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Family Funeral Chapel Baxter.
