Rev. Dr. David Edwin Crum 91, of Plymouth (previously of Brainerd, MN and Spokane, WA) passed away peacefully on January 3, 2022 at home with his wife Bonnie by his side. Born July 19, 1930 to Laura (Seidel) Crum and Clifford Crum in Shelby, Ohio. He was a 1952 graduate of Ohio State University. After 15 years of running his own sales business, and after a divorce in 1972 from Elise Crum, he enrolled at United Theological Seminary in 1974, graduating with a Masters of Divinity degree in 1978. He married Bonnie (Kirk) Caswell on April 4, 1975, and the two of them embarked on a voyage of faith and love for the next 47 years. He was the Associate Minister at Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ in Spokane WA from 1979 – 1983. He became accredited with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, creating a counseling center at Westminster in 1983 where he continued to work closely with individuals and families. He enjoyed doing premarital counseling and teaching numerous courses in couple communication and family life. He loved learning as much as teaching, returning to seminary in 1993 where he received a Doctorate (with distinction) from United Theological Seminary in 2001. He “retired” to Brainerd MN in 2006, becoming a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ where he continued to engage in Christian ministry and counseling, starting a Process and Faith movie night and men’s group.

His love of the outdoors provided his family with sailing adventures for many years on Lake Minnetonka on his Cape Cod catboat, Tradewinds. Many memorable (some more than others) camping trips throughout the US and Canada culminated with the celebration of his 50th birthday on the summit of Mt. Rainier with Bonnie and his three sons. David & Bonnie purchased 40 acres of wilderness in northern Idaho, clearing land and building a place of gathering. Family and friends loved to visit and often found themselves “wanting” to help with construction projects or wood splitting.

In addition to Bonnie, he is survived by his sons; David Crum (Lisa Skluzacek), Stephen Crum (Eileen Kurpiers) and Spencer Crum (Lisa Bachman), Bonnie’s children; Thomas (Nancy) Caswell III, Wendy (Joe) Cutrufelli and Peter Caswell (Staci Ferguson); Grandchildren, Mitchell Crum, Allison Crum and Elijah Crum, Katie Caswell (Daniel Clark), Amy Caswell. Brittany Caswell, Brady Caswell (Jenny); Brother in spirit, Scott (Jackie) Kirk; Nephews Chris Crum, J. Murphy Crum, Bill Beinbrech, and Joel Beinbech. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul (Claire) Crum, and sister Jeanne (Thomas) Beinbrech and grandson John Caswell.

The family thanks Grace Hospice for their steadfast support during the final months, and the staff of Cornerstone Assisted Living for their support and love.
