Wayne & Marie Rakow

Wayne Jr. Rakow, 92, of Fort Ripley, passed away on December 31, 2019 while in care at the Bethany Good Samaritan nursing home in Brainerd. Wayne was born on August 28, 1927 in Wheaton, ND to William and Mary Louise (Gabory) Rakow. Wayne served in the U.S. Army from 1946-47, where he was stationed in Korea. He married his second wife Marie (Kleven) Persson May 25, 1974. Wayne worked for Potlatch Paper Co. in Brainerd for 35 years before his retirement. Wayne was known and will be missed for his quick wit, his excellent memory of history and his sense of humor. He was a lifelong Democrat and also served as President of his local Papermakers union for many years. Wayne is survived by his son Robert (Alisa) Rakow; daughter Robin (Daryl) Kaikkonen; stepson Craig Persson; stepdaughter Faye Persson; grandchildren Jason, Rishona, Joseph, Amy, Katie, Rachel and Jamie; step grandchildren Tammi, Andrew and Cassandra; 9 great grandchildren; 4 great step grandchildren and numerous neices and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; son Bill (Kathleen) Rakow; siblings William, Carl, Leonard, Stella, Laverne, Elaine, Raymond, Phillip and Dale. Wayne’s wife Marie (Kleven) Rakow, daughter in-law Alisa (Robert) Rakow and sister Bonnie recently passed away. Thank you to Wayne’s nephew, Larry Osvold, who helped Wayne and his wife Marie at their home, and also comforted Wayne while he was in nursing home care until his death.

Marie Alice Rakow, 82, of Fort Ripley passed away June 16, 2022 while in care at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. Marie was born on December 30, 1939 to Kermit and Alice (Shannon) Kleven in Braham, MN. Marie married her second husband, Wayne Rakow, May 25, 1974. Marie worked in retail sales including Obriens, Herbergers and Thrifty White before retiring. She was an avid supporter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, MN public TV, a lifelong Democrat, and an accomplished artist with many wonderful nature paintings she gave away to family members. Marie will be sorely missed for her kindness, and her loving smile. She is survived by her son, Craig Persson; daughter Faye Persson; brother Clyde (Kathryn) Kleven; stepson Robert (Alisa) Rakow; stepdaughter Robin (Daryl) Kaikkonen; grandchildren Tammi, Andrew and Cassandra; step grandchildren Jason, Rishona, Joseph, Amy, Katie, Rachel and Jamie; 4 great grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wayne Rakow; sisters Sharon, Diane and Elouise, and stepson Bill (Kathleen) Rakow. Her daughter in-law Alisa (Robert) Rakow recently passed away. Thank you to next door neighbors Calvin, Norma and Debbie Gilson for keeping the driveway plowed and helping Marie during her illness, and also to her great grandson Joe Rakow, who helped Marie as well.

A private military ceremony will be held for Wayne and his wife Marie, at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Camp Ripley, where they will both be interned together. A celebration of life will be held for both Wayne and Marie from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, September 16th at the Fort Ripley Township Town Hall 5190 Legend Ln, Fort Ripley.  Arrangements are with the Halvorson Taylor Funeral Home in Brainerd, MN.
