The illustration depicting hands in handcuffs actually started with a photograph of a white man's hands in slight silhouette. In the creation of the illustration certain digital techniques were applied to create the effect of movement, slight transparency and contrast against a brighter background, but it appears the perception of the final illustration may be that the hands belong to a person of color, which was unintentional. Actually, the illustrator is sensitive to these harmful stereotypes as the grandmother of four children of color.
