I found this report by David Watson among my teaching keepsakes. I was teaching fifth graders in Deephaven (1959-60). David was an excellent student; I remember him very well.

What America Means to Me by David Watson
America is my country. This is what it means to me. A long sunbeam brought me to this country. This sunbeam is God to whom I owe all my blessings. This sunbeam has inspired many patriots: Washington, Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Sherman and Mead. America is God's country and may His light shine on her freedom.

America is free. As a citizen my duties are to vote in every election, uphold the laws, be willing to defend it in every way, keep it free and preserve its resources. I will try to do these things in every way I possibly can.
