Appeasement can also be a slippery slope.

Look at history. It is littered with failed attempts to appease evil.

The question we - and you - should be asking ourselves is, "Why are we so fixated on protecting just one religion over others?"

Indeed, why are we so fixated on defending against insults to Islam?

Is it because of the false notion that all religions, like all ideologies, are equally valid, and therefore, righteous?

The simple answer is "yes."

That is the true danger. Viewing all ideologies, and in this case, a theocracy, as an opposite and equal side of a coin.

Let's select the obvious analogy, Nazism.

Nazis shunned Christianity and religion in general. Nazism was their religion. Nazis had goals, evil goals, and were intent on seeing these goals fulfilled.

Did the rest of the world simply say, "Well, they believe what they believe, let's leave them alone?"

No. The world fought back against an evil ideology/pseudo religion.

Evil must be confronted and eradicated. But evil has a way of donning many masks. Evil often disguises itself as legitimate.

It is foolish and naive to think that appeasing evil - and the goals of evil people - will protect anyone.

The slipperiest of slopes is the one that teaches us to appease the evil, to avoid confrontation or conflict at all costs.

Contrary to that misguided philosophy, some things are worth fighting for. That also carries with it the truth that evil needs to be destroyed when it rears its head in murder, chaos and violence.

One final question, Mr. Holst: You offer advice to avoid enflaming violence by degrading other peoples' religions. When was the last time you saw someone murdered or beheaded for putting a Crucifix in a jar of urine and calling it "art"?

When was the last revenge murder or even a protest march over the Christians burned alive in their own Middle Eastern churches?

Selective shock. Selective anger. Selective appeasement. These are the true slippery slopes to be avoided, for murder is murder, and evil is evil.
