Reader Opinion: Observations of candidates for the primary
I will share my observations of candidates running from both political parties for Tuesday's primary election.
For attorney general, I have known DFLer Tom Foley for 40 years. In 1989, Foley was the only elected official who testified in support of my stiffer-penalties bill for violent crime. Foley would make an excellent attorney general.
Republican Doug Wardlow would also be an excellent attorney general. He has an exemplary record of legislative service. Wardlow believes in the rule of law.
In the governor's race, I served in the Legislature with Jeff Johnson and Tim Pawlenty. I know Jeff Johnson to be a principled conservative and a person of integrity.
Lori Swanson is the most qualified of the three DFLers running. I have known her running mate, Rick Nolan, for 50 years and know him to be a person of outstanding character and integrity. Rick truly cares about people and their problems.
Steve Wenzel represented Crow Wing and Morrison Counties in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1973-2001. He also is executive director of the Rosenmeier Center for State and Local Government at Central Lakes College.
