A recent opinion letter (“Follow Jesus” on July 12) speculated that Jesus would ask each of us to simply follow our own consciences and exercise our freedom of choice when it comes to the pandemic response. Fortunately we don’t have to speculate as to what Jesus would do: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” We wear masks and practice social distancing not for ourselves but for others who may be unwitting victims of our choices. Please forgive me — I don’t want to be unkind— but if our national health depends on the Ayn Randian consciences of those promoting radical individualism — selfishness — then God help us all.
