Kudos to the Brainerd Dispatch for reporting so responsibly the recent meeting of Baxter City Council when they voted to not allow "Caution Geese Crossing" signage on Excelsior Road, in spite of a petition for signage submitted by 50 residents at that location. Understandably, an ordinance was already in place not allowing such signage in the city and we must abide by the law. However, the safety of pedestrians and drivers are at risk, as well as our geese, because Excelsior has become a speedway with new road improvements making it the route of choice between Baxter and Brainerd. Senior residential development in the last 10-plus years has added over 250 to the area adjacent to the 37 goose hatchery. The petitioners are working closely with the Baxter Police Department to enforce speed limits in this location, thereby preventing future accidents. Only time will tell if this new plan will work and not necessitate revisiting the old ordinance.
