The National Day of Reason will be celebrated on Friday, May 7, 2021. The National Day of Reason was initiated by the American Humanist Association and is endorsed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Humanists of Minnesota, The Church of Spiritual Humanism, and Minnesota Atheists to name just a few. As in previous years, this year’s National Day of Reason occurs in close proximity with the congressionally mandated and federally supported National Day of Prayer. The National Day of Reason is celebrated to affirm our commitment to the constitutional separation of religion and government, and to celebrate reason as the guiding principle of our secular democracy. Within the past four years we have witnessed an attempt by a Brainerd School Board Member to try to induce the teaching of biblical creationism and its alter ego: “Intelligent-Design.” We continue to see religiously motivated restrictions to reproductive services and information. Scientific research has been restricted because of religiously based objections. With the availability of effective vaccines for the COVID-19 Virus, we hear about ministers preaching conspiracy theories that sow seeds of distrust in the science that created this marvel of 21st Century science. For those who may ask about the Coronavirus Vaccine, “What’s in it for me?” I would suggest that it will SAVE YOUR LIFE. 98-99% of medical physicians were the first to take the vaccine. The danger of not getting the vaccine is the perpetuation of Coronavirus mutations that have already proven to be more virulent and highly contagious. It is reasonable to get the vaccine as soon as possible. I want to thank all who value the separation of religion and government and join in commemorating this year’s Day of Reason.
