Reader Opinion: Do what’s best for all citizens

Recently there was a statement by a local legislator that it is “dangerous” for the Crow Wing County commissioners not to take his position on a proposed “Second Amendment” resolution. Why just one amendment -- do some people get to pick and choose what laws to obey?

Should the Crow Wing County Board of Commissioners consider establishing Crow Wing County as a First Amendment sanctuary? This could reaffirm the First Amendment for all citizens against government authority or intervention to limit freedom of religion, freedom of speech and the press, and rights to assembly and petition. Note that I said to consider this option; I do not demand that they do so.

Should the county board support other amendments that favor selected constituents? Or is it time for statesmanship, to have a vision and support what is best for all of us as a community that has to work and live together. There will always be people at the edge of trust, decency, respect; thus some law enforcement is necessary. Where is the county board’s leadership position?

On further thought, would it be possible that the commissioners put forth a resolution in support of the U.S. Constitution in its entirety; to not select parts of it to support the agenda of any particular group?

I believe it is inappropriate to suggest that the Board of Commissioners may lose their seats if they do not take action on the “demands” of single amendment supporters.

Our county board should show some statesmanship in addressing the “limited amendment” issue. I believe that supporting the whole Constitution is best for all citizens.
