Reader Opinion: Equal rights under the law

At the recent state candidate forum, Representative Poston was directly asked by the opposition candidate Alex Hering for the reason behind Poston's vote against the Equal Rights Amendment. Poston explained that his reasoning was regarding the word “gender.” Poston discussed how 158 different genders were talked about on the House floor. Besides the irrelevance of the number and names of all the genders discussed, Poston still failed to explain why he is OK with having any American be denied the same rights as other Americans on the basis of a citizen's gender.

Instead, Poston defended his vote by saying what would have been appropriate to him -- in his words, “a man and a woman.” That's also irrelevant.

In America, all adult citizens should have the same rights -- the right to marry, the right to a decent life, the right to bear arms, the right to speak their mind, and their right to earn the same wage for the same job. This should apply regardless of any fellow citizen's religion, race, sexual orientation, or gender -- whatever or however any of these things may be defined.

Rep. Poston voted to deny equal rights under the law to his fellow citizens.
