Reader Opinion: Fair and Just

The Constitution states that it’s the President’s prerogative to appoint a replacement to the Supreme Court when a vacancy occurs. In fact, three Supreme Court justices, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, were confirmed within 45 days after a vacancy. Sandra Day O’Connor and John Paul Stevens were the others.

President Trump chose Judge Amy Barrett, a brilliant woman, sincere Catholic, and devoted wife and mother. Judge Barrett has a glowing track record that includes adopting two children from Haiti. This selfless act, one of many to be mentioned on her behalf, speaks to a character of mercy and compassion, something that is sorely needed in our modern politics.

Some will say that she is too religious. I could not disagree more. Followers of Jesus strive to treat others the way they would want to be treated. Honesty and integrity are at the core of a devout Christian’s life, as is grace and mercy.

I want a judge that will render fairly according to the law. I want the highest judges of the land, who are not accountable to anyone, to judge others knowing that their judgements are answered before God.

President Trump has long known Amy Barrett would be a good choice for the highest court of the land. I’m glad he is moving forward with this nomination.
