Reader Opinion: Go to the source

I guarantee that the legislators (past or current) who have supposedly voted for abortion funding, do so with no more joy than you or I knowing our tax dollars are going to fund them.

Stack of newspapers on a laptop computer.

Let’s set the record straight. There are those going around saying that certain legislators voted to fund abortion because they voted for an omnibus bill.

Here are the facts. In Minnesota, we have Doe v. Gomez. This is basically the state-level Supreme Court decision requiring taxpayers’ dollars to fund abortion. Even with Roe v. Wade being overturned nationally, it doesn’t change abortion regulations here. The State Legislature has to fund abortion according to this court decision. They have no choice in the matter.

Just like we have no choice in paying our taxes (and in turn funding abortions), the State Legislature has to include abortion funding in the omnibus bill. Our Minnesota Constitution requires it. This issue can’t just be changed overnight with new legislation or new legislators.

I guarantee that the legislators (past or current) who have supposedly voted for abortion funding, do so with no more joy than you or I knowing our tax dollars are going to fund them.

Just because someone tells you something doesn’t mean it’s true. Before you vote in the Aug. 9 primary, go to the source. Ask questions. Do some investigating. Vote for those you know will truly stand for your values.
