Reader Opinion: Hats off to Nystrom

Quinn Nystrom was right in her criticism of the Minnesota Senate GOP for not including the issue of life saving insulin in the final health and human service bill.

Senator Gazelka claimed it was too late, but it is my understanding the House of Representatives had passed the bill and the fact is the senate didn’t want it included. And even if this was not the case, it’s never too late to have the issue included in the final conference report. Mr. Gazelka has been there long enough to know this. I served on more than 50 conference committees in my years in the legislature, and often times the leadership or another member would ask for an important bipartisan issue be included. So its apparent the senate turned down the request. Ms. Nystrom was right. The big drug companies have a choke hold on the Minnesota State Senate, as well as the U.S. Senate. Life saving insulin should not be a political issue. Hats off to Quinn Nystrom and her strong advocacy, support and commitment for people who need this help.
