Reader Opinion: Help me understand this

ReaderOpinionBlue.JPG

Black Lives Matter. I wrote this message in chalk on the Paul Bunyan Trail on a Friday. By Saturday morning someone had taken the time to get their own piece of chalk and smear over the message so that you could no longer read it. This brought me to tears, and I asked God to help me to understand.

I see our first step in all of this as confession. We have been born into a system of White Privilege that we need to unlearn. There are so many events in history that I have learned only from one perspective. Let’s take time to learn the whole story. Let’s take time to listen to the parent who fears for their child’s life every day.

Hearing George Floyd cry out for his mother in his dying moments has gone straight to our hearts. I pray we all keep that image in our minds whenever White Privilege flairs up in us.

I biked on the trail again today. It wasn’t chalk that was used to cover up Black Lives Matter. It was spray paint. Some will always vandalize and keep their eyes shut to change. I had written a second message on the trail that Friday, within feet of the first. Choose Love. This message remained. This person decided to leave that message. I was thankful. I chose love and they chose love. Just as you see the peaceful protests flowing across our world, we see the hope and a ray of light here in Brainerd Lakes.
