Reader Opinion: Highway footprints

Today's piece (July 30) about enlarging Minnesota highway transportation spending ignores the externalized costs of highway footprints. For instance, Highway 371 expansion into four lane footprints and bypasses removes huge swaths of precious up north forestry to accomplish, when tweaking the existing highway path to a "super two" (more passing lanes inside existing rights-of-way) would be quite adequate.

Nature's best carbon footprint solution is nature itself. So planting, not destroying, forestry is the most effective thing humans can do to fight a planet heat catastrophe, according to the July 4 Science Journal's report of a credible Swiss scientific study that urges us to plant a trillion trees around the globe, and save what we have.
