I believe the world is round. Six million Jews were killed during World War II. Humans have walked on the moon. Twenty children and six adults were gunned down at Sandy Hook. I believe President Joe Biden was elected in a fair and free 2020 election, just like all of our other elected officials have been for over 200 years. Including Donald Trump in 2016.
I grieve that people can get rich and powerful telling lies and that we can be duped into believing and acting on those lies. I grieve that a whole political party is being held hostage by one man who somehow convinced people that he cares about the little person. I grieve that public lying, anger, hatred and violence have become seemingly acceptable behavior. I grieve that many 2022 candidates have embraced “the big lie” to win their primaries.
I pray positive change will come. I pray the GOP, Republican Party, once considering itself “the moral party,” will regain its footing. I pray that honorable, truth-telling, forward-thinking, democracy-loving, people-advocating individuals will rise up and reclaim the history of a party that has long served this nation well. I pray for the same kind of leadership in the DFL Party.
I’m going to vote for candidates who tell the truth, support our election systems, advocate for people instead of self or party and seek compromise to accomplish good for our country and world. I’m going to vote for people who want our whole history to be taught, environment to be protected, justice for all, science to guide our decisions.
We have the opportunity to hear 8th Congressional District Representative candidates — State Senator, Jen Schultz, DFL, and U.S. Representative Pete Stauber, GOP — at a debate 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Madden’s Resort.
