In 1982 at a luncheon in Baltimore, President Reagan made a comment that shook the core of Democrats everywhere when he said, “the best social program is a productive job for anyone who's willing to work.”
During the term of President Trump we saw the lowest unemployment numbers our country has seen in a very long time. Of course this was all greatly destroyed when COVID hit and governors across the country started to shut down businesses and unemployment numbers skyrocketed. In October of 2019 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that September was the 19th consecutive month where the unemployment rate was below 4%. Under President Trump our economy also saw increases in wages and middle-class income according to BLS. All the while we saw a decrease in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation, dropping to an almost 10 year low in 2019. Proving the point that a job is better than any government run social program. When people earn their own way and are contributing to society, rather than living off of it, they do better and feel better about themselves.
President Reagan also said, “Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.” The longer we continue to allow the government to restrict business and control where we go and what we do the worse our economy will be and we may never see some of our neighborhood businesses again.
Let us not forget what Benjamin Franklin said, “those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
