Reader Opinion: Second comments were insulting

At a 23 April White House briefing, while looking directly at his disbelieving medical advisor, President Trump ad-libbed about using light and disinfectants INSIDE the body to kill the Covid-19 virus.

The next day, after learning from his handlers how preposterous and dangerous such a suggestion was, the president walked his comments back ... but not by apologizing or saying his words were "poorly chosen" or any of those diplomatic terms. No, our infallible president absolved himself by stating, "I was asking a question sarcastically to reporters like you just to see what would happen..." So, as so often before, apparently the blame is really on the press.

Mr. President, your initial comments were dumb — people with big megaphones should know to think before they speak. But your second comments were insulting. Just how dumb do you think we are to buy an excuse like that? You could regain a smidgen of credibility by occasionally admitting a mistake rather than casting blame.
