I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. I expect certain basic commitments from our elected officials, whether Republican, Democratic, Libertarian or Green Party – to uphold the Constitution, and to support the peaceful transfer of power, a founding tenet of our country. I was sorely disappointed to see that Congressman Pete Stauber signed on to the Texas Attorney General's lawsuit to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in an attempt to install an autocrat.
The Texas lawsuit provided no evidence of voter fraud (nor did any of the other 50 plus Trump lawsuits attempting a coup to overthrow the results of the election). Christopher Krebs, a Trump appointee as director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in the United States Department of Homeland Security told us that this election was the most secure in US history. For this he was fired. Even Bill Barr, a Trump loyalist who has politicized the U.S. Justice Department, said: "to date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election.” This election had more than 90% of votes cast with a paper ballot trail, up from 80% in 2016, meaning that votes can easily be traced and recounted one by one.
Pete Stauber has betrayed his constituents and his oath to uphold the Constitution. The honorable thing for him to do is resign. If he refuses to resign, another option would be to put this dishonor behind him, apologize for his seditious action, publicly acknowledge that Joe Biden was fairly elected, and accept the votes of the electors without resistance on Jan. 6.
