Reader Opinion: The 'rules' are gone

With all of the tweets and outrage from Trump every day, it is easy to miss the forest for the trees. When Trump attacks main stream media, he is not looking change anything, he is signaling to his “base” who they should and should not listen to.

When McConnell shuns senate norms to steal a Supreme Court seat and pack our courts with far right judges, he is not only shifting the courts to the right, he is working to throw out law that has 150 years of precedent. Laws that conservative “originalists” interpret as unconstitutional. These include labor laws, civil rights law, voter protection law, and environmental law all under threat of dismantling.

Republicans are not playing by the same set of rules we have known for decades. They are not even playing the same game. Their silence; their failure to recognize the dangers of allowing scandal and corruption to thrive unchallenged; their abdication of constitutionally mandated congressional oversight leaves a clear message to all who are paying attention. Government of the people and by the people will perish under today’s Republican Party. It is severely handicapped today, by tomorrow it may be gone, replaced by an autocracy ruled by the same white power that has facilitated this game change.
