He brings out the worst in me. And I don’t like it. For three and a half years, the president has appealed to the part of me that is all about “me, myself and I.” That is a part of us that parents and older siblings work to rub off or diminish. The president’s hurtful, hateful words about others, people of color and of other nations begins to make or allow me to think the same things. I begin to see myself as less than I want to be.
Unless we have no conscience, we come to realize that a world centered only on “me, myself and I” is self-defeating. Harry Stack Sullivan supported Jesus by defining love as “Wanting the best for another person as much or even more than you want it for yourself.” A president should bring out the best. I look and hope for a change.
