Reader Opinion: We deserve better

There has been a lot of “he said, she said” comments regarding what the president said about our veterans lately. He supposedly made some statements calling those who have been injured or killed in the line of duty, “losers” and/or “suckers.” Many have said that he did make those disparaging remarks, while others have defended him saying they never heard him say that.

I like to look at previous words, behaviors or actions to help me decide if these comments by the President were likely or not. Let’s consider some past comments or actions. He was videotaped mocking a disabled man with cerebral palsy attempting to ask, then candidate Trump, a question. Trump was audiotaped on a bus telling a supporter that he grabbed women by a part of their body. When Sen. John McCain gave the thumbs down vote to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, the president said that the senator was a loser and that he, the president, preferred veterans that did not get caught by the enemy. It does seem that these comments made by the president, could match up to the comments about losers and suckers attributed to him.

Let’s also look at his daily actions since becoming president. According to the Washington Post, who has been tracking Trump’s lies and falsehoods, they indicate that the president has now made over 20,000 lies or falsehoods since taking office. That amounts to about 15 lies/falsehoods per day. So when he says he did not say those comments, should we really believe him or not?

Recently, I saw a lawn sign which said, “Still Deplorable, Vote Trump.” Even his supporters agree that he is deplorable. Is this what we should accept and expect of our president? I say we deserve so much better!
