Reader Opinion: We need a tax bill

Legislators should work for the good of the taxpayers! We need this tax bill — the rest could have waited. You have held us hostage on this.

Stack of newspapers on a laptop computer.

The Minnesota Legislature has really let us down this time. The Senate passed a tax relief bill that would have really helped us Minnesotans.. It would have done the following:

  • Adjusted the Homestead Property Tax Formula and offered some Property Tax relief
  • Lowered the level of some of State Income Tax rates we pay
  • Eliminated the Social Security tax on Social Security Income seniors earn
  • Provided family tax credits.

The House — they failed us! They refused to sign the tax bill unless all three other bills were also agreed to and voted on at the same time. As usual, the House could not agree and now they tell us this: "Wait till next year"
My current Senator, Carrie Ruud, kept me posted on the property tax relief and I appreciate her for following up on that and pressing the Tax Committee to fix the Homestead Exclusion Formula. My House representative told me in May that nothing can be done. Both of my representatives will not be returning due to redistricting changes.

My anger is directed at all House members. Who do you think you work for? Your party?

Try working for the good of the taxpayers! We need this tax bill — the rest could have waited. You have held us hostage on this.

Elections are coming up. I wish we had a strong list of "independent" candidates and we could show our disapproval by voting out all of the Democrats and Republicans alike. They get nothing done and have quit working for us the people a long time ago.
