Reader Opinion: Workforce needs immigrants

As any farmer can tell you, immigrants are needed to do the low-paid, hard work of field hands and chicken processors.

Stack of newspapers on a laptop computer.

In the past week we have seen Florida Governor DeSantis fly 50 Latin American migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, with the idea these people should be stopped at the U.S. border. As any farmer can tell you, immigrants are needed to do the low-paid, hard work of field hands and chicken processors. People in Minnesota, as in much of the country, are getting older. More working-age people are needed to pay taxes and social security. Although in the past, most immigrants were of European origin, now it’s black and brown people who are coming in to work.

We can only produce economic security through diversity.
