I've served as a trustee at the Deep Portage Conservation Learning Center beginning in 1977. Al Cibuzar of AW Research presented "Remote sensing using satellite imagery data (Land-sat data) and utilizing visible and infrared photography to define land use impacts upon the Mississippi Headwaters - the Pine River Reservoir - better known as the Whitefish Chain of 14 lakes."

The Aug. 6, 1981, Country Echo headline "TV Coverage boosts water quality interest" in a dramatic new segment.

What TV didn't say: "Doctor Robert Uppgaard, the Pequot Lakes Dentist, who is spearheading the project is coordinating the study with the cooperation with a coalition of property owners associations extending from Walker to Brainerd."

The point missed on television is that public participation is the vital element to the success of this program.

On Feb. 25, 2003, I spoke at a rally in the rotunda of the State Capitol as part of a statewide "Protect Our Water Citizen's Day." Hundreds of Minnesotans from across the state gathered at the Capitol to back the Protect Our Water legislative agenda of the Minnesota Environmental Partnership.

"Our environment is the heartbeat of our economy-and our quality of life. Water is our most precious resource."
