Driftwood Resort on Upper Whitefish Lake shut down in 2009 and was subdivided into 10 lakeshore parcels and three off lake parcels. A developer has purchased five of the lakeshore parcels and has requested that Crow Wing County rezone those five parcels as a single waterfront commercial parcel to develop as a new Driftwood Resort & Lodge.

At the Feb. 21 Crow Wing County Planning Commission/Board of Adjustment public hearing the developer presented his plan for a common interest communion resort consisting of nine remodeled cabins, 11 new cottages, a restaurant, a two-story clubhouse, a two-story lodge, a maintenance building, and 74 boat slips. The developer was told to rework his plans and that the rezoning request would be tabled until the May public hearing after a sight visit without snow and ice. It was also stated that the developer should work with the county, DNR, soil and water district, etc., to make sure the May proposal would be acceptable to the commission.

On April 8, there was a county development review team meeting. At that meeting the developer presented his revised plan which removed the lodge and modified other items. The developer was again told to work with the county organizations to develop an acceptable plan.

There was a development review team site visit on May 2.

The next public hearing on the Driftwood development will be 5 p.m. May 16 at the Crow Wing County Historical Courthouse. The developer's revised plan will be available on the county website May 9. If you have comments on the proposed plan, please submit them to the county so that they will be included in the public hearing packet.

We are not opposed to the development. We just want to make sure that the development meets all zoning and environmental requirements.
