As a transplant from the Twin Cities two years ago, I knew that the best way to be involved in this community was to simply get involved.
With myriad opportunities available, one standout was the League of Women Voters. By joining, I've had the chance to meet some wonderful people and to be involved with processes that promote civic engagement amongst the citizens of the Brainerd lakes area. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government. It works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influence public policy through education and advocacy. I'm writing to recommend readers to consider joining the local chapter or to attend monthly meetings. This group seeks to understand and to be knowledgeable about our community in many ways. In the past, we have had speakers who included school Superintendent Laine Larson, county commissioners Rachel Reabe Nystrom and Rosemary Franzen, Bruce Buxton with the River to Rails Initiative, Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Director Steven Wright, and Debby Erickson, Crow Wing County Administrative Services director. Upcoming monthly meetings include, Kyle Bauer, CEO of the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, and Dr. Rachel Cady, in February and Carla White with the National Loon Center in Crosslake in April. Meetings are announced in the Brainerd Dispatch or find us on Facebook.
