Reader Opinion: Handicap accessibility

Ok, I have lived in Brainerd for over 10 years. I live with multiple sclerosis, limiting my mobility. I have used a cane and most recently, an electric wheelchair.

Brainerd is not handicap accessible! Some say that it is, but they have not been in my shoes.

Handicap accessible parking downtown Brainerd: Know anyone that had to use crutches due to temporary injury or surgery? If you park in a handicap accessible spot, by the time you arrive at the your destination, you are ready for a nap, as you are exhausted from the hike from the "accessible: parking spot! Oh! Wait a minute. That is if you find a spot or the excess snow in the lot hasn't been pushed into the handicap parking spot. Can't find a handicap accessible parking spot in Downtown Brainerd? Not surprised. There are a whopping two spots in the city lot. I hope that you didn't come to enjoy coffee or shop for furniture.

You may be saying, "Why is she complaining? She has an electric wheelchair." Well, I drive a van that has a ramp. You can't just park in any handicap spot. It needs the extra space for the ramp, hence the van accessible parking spots with the extra space with lines through it. Brainerd's two handicap accessible parking spots in the city lot are for cars.

Yes, I have brought this issue to the attention of a few business owners downtown. I was told parking is not their responsibility. I took my concern to a Brainerd official. He told me that it wouldn't happen overnight. When I followed up, I was sent another route.
