Every two years and even more so on those four-year cycles we come into that special time when we get inundated with phone calls, mailers and doorknockers from people who are trying to get our vote.
As we move into summer we will see candidates and their volunteers at community events and walking in parades. Yards and roadways will soon fill up with signs and soon the television and radio will no longer sell anything but people, with the wonderful tagline of "I approve this message."
I have never run for office but I have given my time to candidates. I have been one of those people making phone calls on behalf of a candidate and I have gone door-to-door as well. I believe in an involved electorate as well as an informed one.
As we move into summer and campaigns become more active, I hope you, the voting public will do a few things. First, be kind; that person on the other end of the phone may be that candidate's child, who loves their dad and wants them to get re-elected in the case of Josh Heintzeman. Second, listen to what the candidate has to say; you may very well be surprised with the ideas the candidate has for turning around this stagnant growth economy. Let Stewart tell you his plan for igniting the fire. Third, be thankful; yes it can certainly be annoying and you may find yourself screaming at the radio when another commercial comes on that you disagree with but remember, we are lucky we get a say.
