I would like to respond to Marlys Beavers' letter from last week's newspaper.

My intention is not to change your opinion about President Obama's proposal to offer free tuition to community colleges; however, I think your assertion that young people today are just as capable of paying their way through college is considerably uninformed.

There seems to be a pervasive belief that the younger generation is unable to afford a quality education out of laziness or an affinity for spring break and binge drinking. The reality is rather different. To use your alma mater as an example, the estimated fees at Macalester College for the 2015-2016 academic year are $59,761, according to their website. This figure does not include books, gas or other expenses. Now, if you were to work 30 hours a week at a very generous rate of $14.50 per hour (double the national minimum wage) you would earn $22,620 per year. This amount would not even cover half of the tuition at Macalester ($48,666/year). Frankly, given your college education, I am disappointed that you did not do this research yourself.

It could be done, Marlys, but the times have changed. You were fortunate enough to be educated in circumstances which allowed you access to affordable schooling. It is discouraging that you do not think others deserve the same opportunity.
