About six weeks ago there was an article in the Brainerd Dispatch titled, "Brainerd History Week." The article detailed preliminary plans underway to hold the second annual Brainerd History Week, with events scheduled Sunday, June 14, through Sunday, June 21. Mary Koep and Andrew Hook were listed as contact persons. The next day, I called Mary and told her of our Brainerd area chapter (Captain Robert Orr) of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. During the phone conversation Mary invited me to attend the next planning committee meeting.
When I became a member of the planning group, I was impressed with the quality of the events which are scheduled to be held during Brainerd History Week. The committee has done a phenomenal job. The scheduled events include something for every age and interest during the weeklong celebration. Whether you grew up in Brainerd or are a newcomer, you will learn the importance of the railway, the paper mill, early settlers, and tourism, all of which have made Brainerd what it is today.
Captain Robert Orr Chapter, NSDAR, is pleased to be involved, because our organization promotes historic preservation, education and patriotism. Our chapter is a partner with the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration. We have committed to hold events during the period 2015 through 2017 that will recognize, thank and honor our Vietnam veterans and their families. We are honored to sponsor a special event for Vietnam veterans on June 15, designated as Veteran's Day during Brainerd History Week, at the Crow Wing County Historical Museum. We will also assist with the northside home tours by serving refreshments and acting as tour guides at the Werner Hemstead historical home.
I encourage everyone to make plans now to participate in the second annual Brainerd History Week!
Regent, Captain Robert Orr Chapter, NSDAR
