'Tis the season for hope, possibility and celebration. It is also the season for letting go of the old darkness, the fear and the defensiveness. It is the beginning of the end of shadows as things begin to take human form with the emerging light, as fears melt away, and as we see that the reality is not so frightening.
This is a time that has been significant throughout human history because the solstice signals the return of the light, increasing sunlight with each day. All cultures and religions have connected their own significance and symbols to this time, and however it is celebrated it has deep spiritual importance.
Christians connect this time with the birth of Christ, with spiritual reawakening of the best human impulses and hope for the redemption of the human spirit.
However one views this season, unless they are closed to the hope of human possibility, it is an opportunity to reconnect with community, to take down the walls that artificially separate humans from one another, to reconnect with all of humanity, to open our hearts and hands to a world of others more like us than not, and to see ourselves as part of a life that includes nature, a reconfirming of our connection with our environment and the planet that sustains us.
It is a time to recommit ourselves to healing our hearts, our communities, the nation, the world and our planet. It is time to find the courage to listen to our better angels.

What clearer signal do we require than the returning of the light.
