I've learned a few things about our national anthem. Francis Scott Key witnessed the British attack on Fort McHenry on the night of Sept. 13, 1814.
To show how much God loved and protected America, on Aug. 23-24, 1814, the British came to Washington, D.C. to burn it to the ground! They did burn down the White House and Capitol and some other buildings, but heavy thunderstorms, possibly a hurricane, helped put out the fires, than a tornado came through and chased the Brits out in 26 hours. It was known as the Storm That Saved Washington.
For 25 hours, the British lobbed between 1,500 to 1,800 cannon balls into or at the fort. Again, in a rain storm, which put out the cannons balls fuses or, "Bombs bursting in air," was because of fuses to short to make it to the fort.
The British couldn't figure why the flag was still flying. When Mr. Key was released, he went to the fort and saw what kept the flag flying, it would have fallen except for the bodies holding it up.
