A recent decision by our Crow Wing County Commissioners at their June 23 meeting was disappointing. When all five Commissioners were in consensus for removing our right to elect county auditor-treasurer and recorder positions, it appeared a tad bit unusual for all were in total agreement on this issue.

Prior to the public hearing with citizens speaking in opposition to the change, County Administrator Tim Houle went into a lengthy statement to validate his opinion of why the position appointment decision would be in the public's best interest. His plan to restructure, reassign, and create an administrative services department would save money and improve service.

This is Mr. Houle's unsubstantiated bureaucratic opinion.

At one point, Mr. Houle used an example of an elderly man needing to make six stops to complete his county transaction. My question is, how often does that happen? Only county staff know the answer and I theorize it is seldom. Sometimes, the elderly feel a sense of purpose when conducting their business in person, not always a problem as alleged by Mr. Houle. With today's technology, many county business matters may be accomplished by phone and/or computer.

With 38 of 87 Minnesota counties changing county positions from elected to appointment, does that validate the change would be suitable for our county? When has our county saved money? Can't prove it by looking at my property tax statements.
