Reader Opinion: Support our public libraries

Minnesota does not have a budget surplus and never did. What it has is a failure to adequately fund critical and essential public services. Our public libraries are just one at the top of a long list.

Did you know that state funding for our regional library system increased just one time in the past 20 years?

Did you know that 7 out of 10 Minnesotans have a regional library card?

Did you know that over the past year our regional library system drew three million more visitors than Disney World?

State funding is vital to public library operations and promotes efficiency and effectiveness statewide. I encourage you to ask your legislators to support HF (house file) 1282 and SF (senate file) 1704. When enacted, these bills will reverse the failure of prior legislative bodies to adequately support our public libraries. The passage will allow our public libraries to meet the needs of those they serve today and into the future. Thank you.
