I cannot believe the Crow Wing County board feels because they have failed in their job to maintain county roads over many years and now they want someone else to pay for them. They have been kicking the can down the road but not facing up to their responsibility to maintain those roads. Now the Brainerd Dispatch has come out and endorsed this idea. Some people feel the tourists will come to town and pay this. The ones who will pay the most are the ones who shop daily, weekly or monthly from Cass, Aitkin, Morrison, Mille Lacs, Todd and Wadena counties who are already paying for their county, township and city taxes where they live. These are hard working families, retired people who are doing their best to pay their bills and now are being asked to pay for Crow Wing County roads. These are the same people who already are paying 1/2 per cent sales tax for sewer in Brainerd/Baxter. I'm so happy when I use a bathroom in Brainerd/Baxter, I flush three times to get my money's worth. We live in East Gull Lake, Cass County, where we are paying bonds for sewer and roads not expecting someone else to pay our bills. I can see why Dispatch is endorsing this, they are taxpayers in Crow Wing County and their taxes will go down. My wife and I have been retired for 16 years on a fixed income, we have no extra money to pay for Crow Wing County roads. My first thought is to cancel my subscription to the Dispatch and use that money to pay my 1/2 per cent sales tax.
