THE CENTER: Creative solutions for long afternoons

Now that we have switched from daylight saving time, the afternoons seem so long. I have some ideas for you to fill those long afternoons.

Here at The Center, we have many activities, events and programs from Monday through Friday that will make your afternoons go by fast.

If you are a person who enjoys games, we have plenty to choose from. We play mahjong at 10 a.m. Wednesdays or there are lessons, if you want to learn how, at 10 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays. We play a lot of card games: party bridge at 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, duplicate bridge at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, progressive 500 is held at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays and cribbage at 1:15 p.m. Monday. For bridge, please sign up with the coordinators of these groups to make sure there are partners. if you are interested, call The Center at 829-9345 and we will connect you.

Are you looking for art groups? We have many to offer. Folk painting and oil painting classes are held at 1 p.m. Tuesdays. Watercolor painting is held at noon Thursdays. Rosemaling is held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, where you will also learn about Norwegian culture and stories. Woodcarving is held at 9 a.m. Thursdays. They are a fun group and will get you started carving a wooden boot shape.

Let us know if you are interested in any of these art groups and we will let the instructor know so you have the right materials needed for the classes. There may be a materials or instructor fee. All of our art groups have fun while learning the different mediums of art. We welcome you to come in and check out the group prior to joining.

Shorter days seem to come with less physical activity, so we have some great exercise options to get you moving. We have Bone Builders class that meets at 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This class works on your muscle tone and statistics show it helps with osteoporosis. If you're looking for more of a beat, Core Rhythms class meets at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class will have you movin' to the music. We also have wonderful workout rooms to offer open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a cardio workout room with treadmills, recumbent bikes, a row machine and HOIST machine. There is a balance room with exercise balls, bocce ball and a variety of stretching machines.
