This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). During the day, Scott Stanfield patrols the streets as a Brainerd police officer. After work he changes into a different uniform and patrols the sidelines as a volunteer coach for the Brainerd boys' basketball team. The 36-year-old is in his third season for the Warriors.

Talk about a better Baxter city hall - an idea whose time has never come - surfaced at yesterday's council meeting. There are many problems with the current building, a converted school house. Mayor Don O'Brien said, "The whole police dept. is no bigger than the bathroom in my house."

(Photo) Herb Kessler, Brainerd's elementary education director, receives a plaque honoring him as the 1978 Outstanding Citizen of the Year, sponsored by Community Action. He is the fifth to receive the honor. Mayor C. Elmer Anderson presented the plaque.

Brainerd overcame the loss of Jeff Smith's scoring punch with the backcourt of John Boeder and Wayne Anderson combining for 36 points in a 63-56 surprise of favored Staples. Forward Jim Isle backed them up with a solid 16-point effort.

The two brothers paroled from Leavenworth Prison, who have committed several armed robberies, are believed hiding in Brainerd after escaping from a police gun battle south of town. Residents are warned to lock their cars. Their bullet riddled car has been viewed by hundreds at the police garage.
 

  • 100 years ago (1919)

In the heart of the Gull Lake region, just 20 minutes drive from Brainerd, Anton Mahlum has platted a fine lake home section. The land has historic value, has elms 5-feet in diameter, a sugar bush where the Chippewa made maple syrup - and all just blocks from the Gull Lake highway.
