ST. PAUL-The Staples-Motley Cardinals and Pierz Pioneers each advanced two wrestlers to the semifinals after Day One of the Class 1A state tournament Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.
At 113 pounds, Spencer Miller of Staples-Motley defeated Zander Jenson of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton by a 14-1 major decision. Miller defeated Canon Swanson of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa by a 5-3 decision to advance to the semifinals.
At 132, Brandon Ortman of Pierz defeated Matthew Frost of New York Mills with a 16-5 major decision. Ortman defeated Gage Zieske of Osakis 10-3 to advance to the semifinals.
At 170, Alex Erpelding of S-M pinned Noah Scott of Canby in 53 seconds. Erpelding pinned Elijah Cloos of Ortonville at 1:53 to advance to the semifinals.
At 182, Brett Kapsner of Pierz pinned Steven Erkenbrack of Wadena-Deer Creek at 2:49. Kapsner defeated Jacob Arends of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton with a 10-0 major decision to advance to the semifinals.
