A four-run first inning was enough offence for Brainerd to edge Fergus Falls in the first round of the VFW State Tournament Thursday, August 9 at Adamson Field in Brainerd.

First baseman Michael Laber went 1-for-3 with a two-run single. The offense cooled

down after the first inning but it wasn't a problem for starting pitcher Ethan Sannes.

Sannes threw 138 pitches in a seven inning shutout with seven strikeouts.

Fergus Falls left 10 runners on the bases and wasn't able to capitalize on six hits and

seven walks. Brainerd turned two double plays in route to a first-round win.

The morning showdown was highlighted by an ejection in the sixth inning. Fergus Falls

pitcher Arik Heacox rounded second after a single and forced a collision with

Brainerd second baseman Kaleb Sundquist. Heacox was removed from the game

after the incident.

Brainerd 11, Willmar 4

The bats woke up for Brainerd in the second round of the VFW State

drove in two runs with a double in the left centerfield gap. Wicklund had two more

Starting pitcher Michael Laber shook off the early run he allowed in the first inning and threw five straight scoreless innings. Laber is the second Brainerd pitcher to
