Weightlifting: Liftathon raises more than $15,000
Brainerd students in grades 8-12 helped raise more than $15,000 in the 29th annual Sertoma Sunrise Warrior Liftathon in March at the Brainerd High School weight room.
Funds were raised by 152 students for charitable organizations and those in need in the Brainerd area. Participants were divided into 11 fundraising teams with 12-15 lifters per team.
The first place team, captained by Scott Parsons, was Anika Aho, Jewel Aho, Mark Boran, Harry Carlson, Avery Eckman, Garret Gardiepy, Grant Gardiepy, Max Lelwica, Simon Nelson, Malina Schiller, Sara Schiller, Emma Tautges, Dominik Waytashek and Lauren Goralsky.
Second place went to the team captained by Craig Miller and David Downing. The team was Nathan Bessingpas, Tommy Fickett, Forest Gibson, Julia Marthaler, Autumn Miles, Myah Nelson, Lily Schaeffer, Davon Stuckey, Ethan Windorski, Isaiah Windorski and Josh Stark.
Bruce Kennedy and Jeff Hilborn captained the third-place team of Ara Anderson, Ella Anderson, Carson Coventry, Kayla Deason, Jacob Drietz, Calvin Foss, Brett Hague, Erin Hoelzel, Maddie Holm, Miya Jordan, Lexi McElfresh, Ethan Strong.
The Sertoma Club is sponsoring a recognition breakfast April 18 in the BHS cafeteria for the top three fundraising teams and the top male and female Liftathon Most Pounds Per Ounce winners.
Junior Broc Peterson was the boys MPPO winner and junior Maddie Holm was the MPPO winner for the girls.
Senior Mark Boran will also be recognized for his participation in the Liftathon in each of the five years that he was eligible for the competition.
