Jake Heikkenen and Cody Vleck scored goals for Brainerd as the Warriors opened their season Wednesday with a 3-2 loss to Dakota United at Apple Valley High School.

Zach Denny and Heikkenen combined to make 20 saves for the Warriors who were outshot 23-9.

Warriors coach Todd Person said the Warriors played extremely well for their first time out on the floor.

"Dakota United has an amazing senior player, Grayson Nicolay, who put in all three of their goals," Person said. "We played to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period. We had our regular goalie, Zach Denny, move out on the floor, while Jake Heikkenen moved into the net. Jake did an excellent job of stopping the first seven shots he saw but in the

last 45 seconds he had a couple tough shots get past him.

"For the third period, Zach moved back into the net and Jake came back out to his

starting position at left wing. Jake put in a goal in under two minutes but about five minutes later, Grayson put them up by two again.

"Our players never quit and with under five minutes left, Cody put one in. We had a couple more opportunities inside a minute to play with two shots from Jake going wide and hitting the pipe."

"This game was more physical than our players are used to, but I thought they really responded well. We were definitely tired, but everyone continued to battle and even with 14 seconds left, when Jake hit the pipe, I don't think our players ever felt out of it."
