DETROIT LAKES-Gavin Hoelzel and Emma Hiebert each skied to second-place finishes for the Brainerd Warriors, who finished second as teams in both the boys and girls races Monday, Jan. 14, at the Detroit Invite at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area.
Hoelzel's time of 41.93 was 1/100th of a second behind Louie Stuck who led St. Cloud to first place. The top four finishers for each team count toward the team score and St. Cloud placed four in the top six.
Rounding out the scoring for the Brainerd boys were Max Darkow (5th), Calvin Madison (7th) and Trevor Hutchison (14th).
The St. Cloud girls led by Ella Dols edged Brainerd by one point, 76-75, for first place. Scoring for Brainerd behind Hiebert were Erin Hoelzel (4th), Alli Krantz (7th) and Maddie Kalenberg (8th).
"This was the first time we skied against St. Cloud this year," said Brainerd head coach Jim Ruttger, "but we'll see them again this Friday at Annandale when the same three teams will meet again (at Kimball's Powder Ridge Ski Resort).
