TAYLORS FALLS-Brandon Neifert and Maddie Kalenberg were the top finishers for the Brainerd Warriors who achieved their best showing ever in the 25-team Wild Mountain Invite Friday, Dec. 21.
"This was a pretty historic day for Brainerd," said Warrior head coach Jim Ruttger. "The boys won it and the girls placed second. The boys team was third last year and the girls were third once before. That was the highest we had ever been before today."
Ruttger explained that because of the size of the race, each school was limited to six skiers with only the top four scoring points.
"We didn't have anyone in the top 10 for either race," he said, "but all of our top four on both sides had two solid runs without any mishaps. Both Brandon and Maddie were in the top 10 after their first runs.
"We were the only up north team there. The rest were metro teams and it was kind of fun being down there as they kept looking at us and wondering who we were."
