Alpine Skiing: Warriors sweep Breakaway Invite

Brandon Neifert

ST. CLOUD — Brainerd placed four boys and four girls in the top 10 of the Friday, Jan. 2, Breakaways Invite to sweep the competition at Powder Ridge Ski Resort.

Brandon Neifert posted a second-place time of 46.21 followed by Gavin Hoelzel in third, Max Darkow in fourth and Cal Madison in seventh.

“Our top four guys all had really nice clean runs,” Warriors head coach Jim Ruttger said. “Brandon was actually in first place after the first run and held on for second place

Cassidy Chaney led the Warrior girls with her fourth-place time of 51.97. Maddie Pederson finished fifth, Erin Hoelzel in sixth and Calia Chaney in 10th.

“Our girls had some issues,” Ruttger said. “Maddie Kalenberg fell, Emma Hiebert fell so we had Cassidy was our top girl. The second half of our run order really came through. It was a good result.”

This was Brainerd’s first time competing in this event, but not at Powder Ridge.

“We added this race for the first time,” Ruttger said. “We usually race here for the Annandale Invite, but we wanted to take every opportunity to challenge ourselves against St. Cloud because they’re the team that kept us out of going to state last year on the boys side. It was nice to have a victory on their hill.”
